The museum consists of a length of track with industrial buildings and many diesel and steam locomotives plus wagons all associated with the Quarry system which was very extensive around Exton. Cranford Nr2 shunting wagons through the station Another loco Belvoir stands outside the loco works Cranford Nr2 shunting iron ore wagons in a siding Belvoir outside the works Diesel shunter MrD shunts wagons around The friendly driver and volunteers quite happily moved the engine for pictures.Here Cranbourne Nr2 poses near the apple tree Even allowing me access to the loading bay to get this shot Euclid dump truck In the loco yard Every colour engine that you can imagine There are some real relics in the yard This beautifully crafted model of the walking dragline Sundew was on show in the shop/cafe area Cranbourne Nr2 waits for the road Further up the headshunt are some old quarry wagons This Ruston Bucyrus face shovel was working moving ironstone These line operated shovels were commonplace 40years ago now they are all hydraulic An 0-4-0 ST which once worked the quarry branchlines The area was covered with quarries which were opened up to supply the steelworks at Corby. The museum is open on several sundays a year and well worth a visit.The staff and volunteers are very friendly and only too willing to show you round. Inside the works Once upon a time these locos would all have been employed on quarry branches and in steelworks and coal mines Cranbourne Nr2 and wagons ready to depart In the museum this magnificent Meccano model of the Dragline excavator Sundew This excavator by Ransome Rapier was the largest of it's kind in the world This giant excavator walked from Exton to Corby a distance of 13 miles in the 1970's as was famously reported in the newspapers of the time All that now remains of this massive excavator is the rusting cab section seen here beneath the blue tarpaulin

The new canopy roof can be seen in this view from the car park.I presume the diesel is a station pilot! Whilst the roof has been renewed the old brick buildings remain.New platforms have also been constructed The station entrance has been remodelled to include ticket office and a small cafe and papershop.The old entrance was just a hole in the wall. A view of the north end where extensive track modifications have taken place Looking towards Coventry as a train approaches One of the impressive Network Rail posters showing Rugby station at night. I then went to find the site of the old Great Central Girder Bridge which has sadly gone.The abutments can just be seen. I spent many happy hours near this spot as a lad in the 1950's it was a favourite spot for gricers as both the main LMS and GCR lines could be viewed from here. The day of our trip dawned sunny as we waited for the 10.24am departure for Euston seen here approaching Platform 5.

The Glossy brochure was pretty much a farce as regards which locos were running on the friday as there were only three locos actually on passenger train duties, no more than on thursday. Ok so Tornado was one of them, but not good enough for a Gala! Also there were no freights running at the weekend! My rant is over so here are the pics,enjoy. Arriving on the Thursday I paid a quick trip to Grosmont station to purchase a gala programme and was in time to see tornado run round it's train. Nameplate close up.Does it look right do you think? Taken from the footbridge at LLangollen station Morayshire stands ready to depart Having travelled to Berwyn behind Morayshire we waited for the Black Five on the guards vans with Ex GWR 2-6-3T N0 5199 banking at the rear Royal Scot 6100 on loan from Bressingham Museum passes Berwyn with a non stop train to Carrog Back at Llangollen B1 Mayflower departs Llangollen resident 0-6-0 PT No 6430 with the Auto train departs from Llangollen.The leading Auto Coach NoW228 is normally resident on the South Devon Railway Close up of 6430 with John Kennedy on the footplate Another local engine Ex GWR 2-6-2t No 5199 with the breakvans heads for the Station A short walk takes us to the River Dee Bridge crossing.Here Royal Scot and Black Five 44801 return to Llangollen tender first. Visiting from the Bluebell Railway but now in British Railways black crosses the Dee bound for Carrog A sideways view of Scottish visitor Morayshire Back at Llangollen things are hotting up.Taken from the road bridge 44801 sits ready to run round Royal Scot following restoration will hopefully soon be seen on the mainline but I am sure the smoke deflectors will be back on by then! After a train ride to the unpronounceable Glyndyfrdwy station Royal Scot prepares to depart for Carrog After a fair walk back from the station we found this location on the s bends. Here City of Truro and 5199 coast down towards Glyndyfrdwy The beaty of the Dee valley countryside is evident and when the sun shines it's perfect Morayshire heads back with the breakvans A further short walk brought us to this location which I named Hanley hollow after my companion.44801 with strange blue backed number plate makes light work of the climb Royal Scot slides by The auto train with the river in the background After walking back to the station we see the Dukedog and fellow black liveried engine 5526 from the South Devon Railway Mayflower on the breakvans passes the Auto train at Glyndyfrdwy 6100 crossing the level crossing Irish Mail a narrow gauge loco on the demo line at Carrog Clive Hanley poses in front of Mayflower at Carrog 5526 departs Carrog with the breakvans Taken from the train at Glyndyfrdwy Dukegog 9017 and Morayshire pass 1306 and 6100 Mayflower back at Llangollen Royal Scot waits it's turn to run round

The 0-6-2T N2 class loco did'nt quite make the Gala but was on display outside the Loughborough sheds N7 0-6-2T from the NNR Prairie 4141 stands at Loughborough station with the first departure. The daffodills are nice Clive . 4141 blasts out from beneath Beeches Road bridge.We noted the trees have been cut down here,pity. ]]> Mon Apr 13 2009 West Somerset Spring Steam Gala 2009 http://steamgalore.fotopic.net/c1675440.html The annual trip to the WSR Spring Gala was eagerly awaited but not so the traditional dousing we seem to get each year.This time it was the strong winds which sought to blow us and the smoke everyway.It was cold wet and windy at times especially on the first couple of days but sunday was lovely.Timetabling was at times baffling with tender first locomotives too prevalent but in spite of all this it was enjoyable.Thanks to Graham,Gordon ,Henry and Dee for their company and to the WSR for keeping this wonderful line running and well kept! On a rather cloudy morning Ex Std Class 2 78019 from the GCR departs Weybourne for Holt L&YR 0-6-0 1300 leaves Weybourne with a freight including breakdown crane Ex WD 2-8-0 90775 on the climb from Weybourne 78019 passes Kelling Heath N7 0-6-2T 69621 at Kelling with the magnificent 1924 built Quad Art teak set owned by the M&GN Society Ex BR Std Class 4 76079 approaches the cutting at Kelling 78019 on the curves leaving Weybourne 69621 with the teak set near Kelling Halt 78019 and 76079 coast down into Weybourne with 1300 waiting to depart L&YR 0-6-0 1300 slips it's way out of Weybourne after a shower of rain The old engine just manages to keep moving on the greasy rails After the light shower it brightened and here 90775 approaches Weybourne from Sheringham whilst 44422 sits in the locoshed sidings Token at the ready on the WD footplate 69621 with the teaks departs Weybourne for Sheringham This set of carriages is in pristine condition and is a credit to the railway B1 4-6-0 1306 Mayflower having emerged from the shed stands in the brief glimpse of sunshine In immaculate condition 1306 is raring to go. Unfortunately it is only timetabled for one run in daylight today.Why? 78019 and 76079 return from Sheringham The pair of EX BR Standard locos depart Weybourne J15 0-6-0 and 69621 double head a departure for Holt from Weybourne A walk along the line towards Sheringham after lunch and 1300 passes the Sheringham road bridge The sky is quite overcast now as 1300 passes 4F 0-6-0 44422 approaches the bridge The smokebox bears the chalk inscription M&GN That's yer lot! Ex WD 90775 with the teak set on the embankment This engine seems to have it's draincocks open all the time A black and white study of the beast passing over the road bridge This caught us out. Mayflower was piloting tender first 76079 towards Sheringham Yet another double header 69621 and 78019 with 1300 bringing up the rear passes the Golf course Ian Riley's Pocket Rocket 76079 passes the Golf course with 1300 once again at the rear With the trains running very late now Mayflower the only loco facing Sheringham passes tender first In poor light 69621 and the Quad Art teak set are Weybourne bound It's dusk and very dark now at 5.30pm as Mayflower at last appears.

Inside the sheds the N2 has been reunited with it's boiler Whilst the Fairburn Tank makes good progress alongside Sir Lamiel 78019 stands outside the sheds .It will soon be departing for the NNR Gala Kinchley Lane was deserted for once as 4141 appears round the bend The tree casts a nice shadow as 4141 passes a deserted Kinchley Lane

Bang on time and at speed Tornado,sunshine and some snow,what a combination! Pity about the smoke,it was a toss up as to which side of the line to stand.

Cromwell with the 9.15 out of Loughborough I have to admit to digital manipulation on this shot, I have removed a high viz video photter from the bridge It makes a change to see a loco facing north on the GCR these days and here 8F 48305 masquerading as 48773 is seen leaving Quorn for Loughborough with the mineral set Std 78019 heads towards Quorn with a mixed freight This location is great for morning shots provided certain photters don't stand near the bridges and ruin everyone elses shots! Walking further down the line into the cutting as 30777 Sir Lamiel passes with the 10am departure from Loughborough Visiting from the NYMR Q6 0-8-0 63395 passes beneath the occupation bridge with the minerals Returned to steam in 2007 the Q6 class locomotives worked freight trains mainly in the North-East Robinson 2-8-0 63601 on a freight approaching Quorn 70013 back as itself on the first TPO races towards Quorn station 78019 at Kinchley Lane with the 11.30am from Loughborough 8F 48773 on a passenger turn and sporting a wreath and LCGB headboard bursts from beneath the pipe bridge near Kinchley Lane.Into the sun this one so I've tried a sepia tone The gallery at Kinchley lane was huge as Q6 63395 passes with the windcutters At Rabbit bridge the swirling wind was making life difficult as Sir Lamiel passes.Note the smoke ring! The smoke just about clears the carriages and the blue sky makes a good background I don't normally bother with tender first pictures but this view of Cromwell on the minerals returning to Loughborough contre-jour lightingpassing Swithland Reservoir is different Similarly 48773 is seen tender first with a freight from Loughborough. I do wish those concrete blocks would move to the left! This shot shows the effect of the strong east wind at this location as 63601 passes with the parcels This is a different shot for me and shows Cromwell heading south between the bridges at Kinchley Lane with the 1.00pm departure from Loughborough A move to Woodthorpe Lane now and 48773 heads north with the parcels beneath the bridge Ex GWR 4141 on it's only outing today heads past Woodthorpe bridge with the 1.35pm local train for Leicester Popular visitor 63395 on the windcutters at Woodthorpe 30777 at Woodthorpe with the 2.15pm A bit further down the line we see 78019 with the parcels train The light in the cutting is rather poor as 70013 heads away from Loughborough towards Quorn with the 3pm departure Cromwell on the 3pm departure heads towards Woodthorpe Lane Much against my better judgement I thought I would try a sideways pan shot of 63601 at Woodthorpe.The trouble is to get it involved a very muddy field! Back at Quorn now and the light is fading as 48773 approaches with the mineral set from Rothley The question on everyone's lips though was would it clash with the Q6 departure. 63395 on it's only passenger turn departs Quorn as 48773 reverses the mineral set into the siding. This unfortunately blocked the view for those on that side and of course the TPO due minutes later! I walked down the line from Quorn station and managed this low angle picture of Sir Lamiel on the TPO set

We arrived at Burrs in time to see the freight charter so after handing over our ten quid we took up our positions ready for several runpasts by the Standard Loco 80098 A beautiful location adjacent to a country park Gradually the light improved The sun threatened to break out and could be seen at times shining on the caravans in the park adjacent to the line.Who in their right mind allowed this development-purposely not shown 45231 passes tender first Resident the Duke of Gloucester approaches Summerseat station 45231 departs from Summerseat towards Bury The austerity saddletank in a rather fetching brown livery about to enter the aptly named Brooksbottom tunnel 80098 pilots 45407 and is seen leaving Summerseat Just about to enter the tunnel What a delightful brown this engine is painted in-seen here passing through Summerseat with the shuttle Taken from the roadside 45231 tender first crosses the bridges at Summerseat The River Irwell flows beneath the bridges as the shuttle passes Taken from above the BrooksBottom tunnel 71000 departs Summerseat The Duke sports The Great Briton headboard for some reason 45231 with one draincock open departs Summerseat station 45407 approaches Ewood Bridge Back at Burrs the sun finally makes an appearance as 80098 passes under the watchful gaze of a family on the footpath 80098 climbs up past Burrs The waiting gallery at Burrs gets excited as the Brown one passes in golden sunlight on the shuttle Alas the sun dips below the hills as 71000 climbs away from Bury towards Burrs and there is just a hint of glint Had it been on time the sun would just have caught the line here.Oh bother!

70048 appears wreathed in steam from beneath Beeches Rd bridge with the 11.30am departure from Loughborough Finally the drain cocks are off and the locomotive can be seen A stirring sight on a very cold morning.Pity about those flats! Only 63601 is left out in the cold at Loughborough shed The newly fabricated side tanks for Fairburn loco 42085 outside the sheds Visiting loco 0-8-0 63395 inside the relative warmth of the shed.(This was a quarter second exposure with camera on a monopod-not bad eh!) 63395 alongside 48305 under repair 42085 from the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway is at Loughborough having new side tanks fitted Fancy trying to sort this lot out! A quick burst of flash illuminates the inside of the smokebox Close up of motion of 48305.Personally I would'nt dare to touch it! Another view of 42085 All those bits go somewhere STD Class 73156 awaiting attention Poor old Class 5 45305 minus it's boiler with 42085 and 4141 in the background I ventured out into the cold at Woodthorpe in time to see 78019 with the 12.30 departure I do believe the sun almost appeared.I had to leave and the sun was out when I got home! I swear Loughborough has it's own sunless climate!
